The chicks are back from their bio-father's house and in school as of yesterday.
I have a ton of bottled up aggression towards their father that I will either a) need to sort through before I manage to get it into the written word or b) get over it. There is little I can do about any of it now.
What I AM fussy about these days is the sheer amount of money I had to shell out JUST for school supplies this year.
Our school system, just like most school systems across this great land of ours, does not supply paper or even a damn pencil to their students any longer.
That alone angers me. But let’s add to it the laundry list of additional supplies each teacher is now insisting that my chicks obtain JUST to come to their class.
When the hell did middle school turn into college? Next thing I know.... I will have to pay for their books.
Some of the most ridiculous items?
A daily planner for History class…..that’s right….I said HISTORY class.
A book cover for her History book (this has to be obtained in no less than one week per the note sent home).
A scientific calculator. (WHY?)
Highlighters.
Blue pens only.
A journal, which has to BE A JOURNAL and not just a notebook or composition book.
These are just merely a few as my shopping cart was FULL of other miscellaneous items on the school lists for each of my children.
I have numerous issues with all of this. For instance:
What if we were poor folk and could not afford such supplies being demanded to attend your class?
Upon exclaiming this from my dinner table, I was instructed that the teachers told the class that if “any student could not afford such things come see them after class and they would be provided”.
WHAT?!!!!
How dare any teacher take an adult issue and force it upon a child to contend with and how absolutely horrifying for that poor child to admit it? School is all about the “haves and the have nots” to children. Forcing any child to contend with that reality is cruel and insensitive.
*gggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrr*
Secondly, I think that if you are going to get freakishly picky about school supplies, you had better roll your ass up to the store and buy enough to supply them. Again…I would like to stress that in college, this is a reality….in middle school this is ridiculous.
Lastly…..I would really hate to have to bring up the whole WAR thing, but just for a minute….just a second really, let me have it.
We spend roughly $12,000 per person in America to be fighting a war without an end.
Do I really, REALLY need to continue this point?
Just think….this entire rant was merely over school supplies. I can’t imagine how badly I am going to loose it when I have to shell out $200.00 in fees (per child) for them to play school sports this year.
Blah.

Wow... and here I was just thinking how much it cost me to CLOTHE the child when she was in school, and now it's SCRUBS! You wanna go THERE today too??
Relax Am... you are camping this weekend... we are going to have FUN damn it!
Boy can I relate to this We bought a ton of school supplies this year and while shopping I saw a whole lot of kids and parents frantically reading off lists of items they had to have for classes. What about other foolish things like having to have an EXTRA pair of gym shoes left in school because they are not allowed to wear their "street" shoes in gym?? Any extra curricular events are sure to cost a fortune. Special shirt, shorts, shoes, socks, and gym bag plus equipment and cost of activitiy. If you ain't got the money, your kid ain't playing. It's discouraging to know we have come to this. You are right - it's another divison between the "haves and have nots".
YES...we are camping this weekend and I am holding on to that with both hands.
And that is an excellent point Ma....if you cannot afford it, your child can no longer play school sports....
Ass nine.
